This is a pretty simple post, but I'm going to link it to my post about boiling egg, and the we are all set for Easter. I have tried this a few ways. i have done a mixture of food coloring and vinigar (extremely viberant, but the color of the finished eggs would rub off on your hands), i Tried a natural dye from beets (pretty but they were all red!) and ive played with wax from candls and crayons (candle wax makes awsome designs, but is not for kids. crayon s are 'eh' but kids love em').
All in all the best way to dye eggs i have found dates ALLLLLLL the way back to......o, i dont know, the 70s? Go to your Dollar store or grocery bargain bin and grab last years simple easter egg kits from last year. do you really think those pellets have an expiration date?
they don't.
at least in my experience. for the easiests of cleanups, i like to get the set that comes with the little cups, pellets, and not much else. thiose cups make great little seed starters when you are done! i got my set of .79 cents at a local P&R. good deal.

for the very brightest of colors add 3 tablespoons of vinigar to every cup EXCEPT the pink (the box says white, but i like to use apple cider vinigar) in the cups. only use the 3 tablespoons, it usually wont cover the egg completely, but it keeps the colors bright, and gives you an excuse to poke at the eggs and jumble them up.
NOW, for the pink pellet, and ONLY the pink pellet, use water instead of vinigar. this gives the color a soft, very pink pastel color. if you do this with the other pellets you will get a pastel color and not a bright viberant color, it just depends what look you are going for.

it is now time to coax in your husband, children, or whoever you plan on coloring eggs with. tempting them with the eggs that had their shell cracked usually works for me. this step is nessisary, because everyone knows its no fun dropping an egg into a cup of vinigar alone.
let each egg sit a good 5 minutes for the brightest results. when i dropped my eggs in, i got a lot of fizzing and it actually 'marbled' the coloring on my eggs a bit. i thought this was pretty cool, but if you want a smoother look, make sure the eggs are completely cool, add a dash of water to the vinigar mix and stir well before adding eggs.

when you lift the eggs from the dye, place them carefully back in the egg crate. i like to let them drip dry a bit first and place them longways (so they dont slide down into the slot) until they dry.
when you are done, display them for easter, hide them in the back yard or peel them and make potato salald!

Pretty Perfect Potato Salad ( For a Crowd!)
INGREDIENTS
Fresh Dill Weed 4 Cloves Garlic (minced) 2 Onions (minced) 1 Bunch Scallions (minced) 2 cups Spicy (Deli) Mustard 3 cups Mayonnaise 1 cup Dijon Mustard 8 Eggs 5 pounds Potatoes (russets are fine) 12 Kosher Baby Pickles (or 6 large, I like the lil' guys) 2 Green Peppers (cubed) 1/2 bunch Celery (chopped) splash of white vinegar pinches of : salt, pepper and paprika |
DIRECTIONS
Toss whole, unpeeled potatoes into a pot of salted water and bring to a boil. When boiling add eggs (strait out of the fridge) to the pot, cover and let go for 10 minutes. Uncover pot, let continue to boil and remove eggs with slotted spoon. Rinse eggs in cold water. Peel, chop and add to large bowl with fresh dill. Chop veggies and add to bowl. When a knife easily passes through the potatoes (20 min perhaps, but do test them), remove from pot, rinse in cold water and peel. Smoosh the potatoes with your hand into the bowl of veggies, add spices, mayo and vinegar to taste and mash all together. Voila! |
